OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT is easily the biggest name in NLP right now for good reason. Its ability to converse realistically and its knowledge on such a diverse range of topics has amazed thousands of people. As a result of this, many companies have created their own versions of ChatGPT. Notably, Google has created Bard, and Microsoft has implemented ChatGPT into Bing. However, these applications aren’t available to the general public. The 3 applications that I chose to list here are all available for everyone to use, and they all serve different purposes.
ChatSonic
ChatSonic is the newest addition to Writesonic, an AI content production platform. The platform calls ChatSonic “ChatGPT with Super Powers”, and I can’t argue with that. ChatSonic is built on ChatGPT’s architecture, GPT-3.5, so the quality of the text produced by the two is fairly on par, without blatant grammar mistakes or awkward phrasing. Like ChatGPT, ChatSonic can remember previous questions that you asked, so you never have to repeat yourself.
How ChatSonic may surpass ChatGPT is through its extra features. For starters, ChatSonic offers microphone capabilities, removing the need to type out each request and allowing users to simply use their voice. In addition to this, ChatSonic offers different personalities that ChatSonic can act out the role of. Some of these personalities include being a Motivational Coach, Philosopher, and Stand-up Comedian. The biggest difference between ChatSonic and ChatGPT is inarguably the fact that ChatSonic has access to the internet. ChatSonic can access Google data, allowing it to stay up to date on all the latest events and news. ChatGPT is yet to introduce this feature, and it’s one of ChatGPT’s greatest shortcomings. Furthermore, ChatSonic can even generate images, another feature that ChatGPT lacks.
Overall, ChatSonic is a great and entertaining application to try out.
Jasper Chat
Jasper Chat, which is still in Beta, is the latest feature of Jasper, an AI writing tool. Jasper Chat functions similarly to ChatGPT. You give it a prompt and it responds. Jasper Chat holds many of the same features as ChatGPT, it saves your previous conversations so that you can come back to it and add more, it can revise text that you provide, and it’s built on the GPT-3.5 architecture that ChatGPT is also built on. Its training data is even about as old as ChatGPT’s, going up to mid-2021. So, what’s special about Jasper Chat?
Currently, it supports 29 different languages for input and output, a useful feature if your native language isn’t English. More importantly, however, is that while it can be used by everyone, Jasper Chat is really built for businesses and offers functionality around advertising and marketing. Similarly to ChatSonic, it has the ability to use Google search data in its responses, which helps make up for the fact that it’s trained on relatively old data.
While Jasper Chat offers great functionality, it is locked behind an expensive paywall, so if you’re solely looking to get entertainment out of the chatbot you use, then Jasper Chat likely isn’t the best choice for you. However, it’s a great choice if you plan to use it for your business.
Perplexity AI
Perplexity AI functions similarly to a search engine and its simple UI is incredibly easy to navigate. Unlike ChatSonic, ChatGPT, and Jasper Chat, Perplexity AI requires no signup, all you have to do is type the URL, and you’re good to go.
Perplexity AI’s main purpose is to aid you in your search for information. It makes it so that you don’t have to endlessly click on different web pages to find what you’re looking for. Instead, it provides a short summary of the answer to your question at the top, as well as a more detailed answer if you want to see that instead. Most importantly though, Perplexity AI cites the sources that it got the answer from, allowing you to both fact- check its answer and take a look at the source for more information on the subject. Essentially, Perplexity AI provides you with a couple of links related to your search as well as summarizes those links in both short and long forms.
It’s also important to note that Perplexity AI functions in real-time, meaning that it’s able to provide information on events that just happened. For example, one of the sources it cited in response to a question that referenced an event that occurred yesterday was a news article that was posted less than an hour ago.
These were the 3 alternatives to ChatGPT that I personally found the most interesting and useful. However, there are a ton of other alternatives that you should consider checking out as well. Some of these include Metaphor Search, Character AI, YouSearch, and Replika. If you know of any ChatGPT alternatives that you think should’ve made the list, let me know!
